In the beginning…

Since I was a child I have dealt with many health issues that impacted what I did, and no doubt, influenced the adult I became. As an adult my mixed connective tissue disease improved however, I became incredibly used to my new ‘norm’ of regular headaches, migraines, lethargy, arthritic pains, tiredness, avoiding physical activity from fear of overdoing it (note: I openly hate exercise) and whatever virus was on the move at the time.

At 20, I decided that I didnt want to continue down the same painful path, take medication for the rest of my life or be in a wheelchair at 30 because my joints couldn’t hack it. I lost a little weight and unsuccessfully tried to be less stressed. 4 Years later, I was truely determined to make a change for my health and wellbeing. My physical and mental health were slowly destroying me.

I researched vitamins, supplements and all the regular go to’s I’m sure most people do. A parent from my class (& former colleague) noticed my ongoing health issues and introduced me to the magical goodies she had found. Sceptical as always, and using money as an excuse, I sat on the idea for awhile. By the end of term one, I was quite sick again and spent most of the Easter break moving between the couch and bed. Enough was enough.

The best thing I ever did was throw my skepticism in the trash and remain open minded on my new health journey (no matter the finance). This was not an overnight fix; which was exactly what I needed.

First Day of Prac.

This morning I ventured into my fourth, first day of prac. As expected, I was excited, nervous and I’d like to think, prepared. As I have done a placement at this school before, I knew many of the faces in my class which made it that little bit easier to settle. My mentor is relaxed which is amazing as it helps me to relax and not stress out so much! It was interesting to see some of my peers posts on preparing for and the actual ‘first day of prac’ including Leesa’s blog post which includes a site on ‘How to be a good student teacher‘.

I was happy to see how Class Dojo looked in action and love the behaviour management scheme in place for this particular Year 1 class. The students are well aware of the rules and the process used towards them being able to gain and lose points from Class Dojo. From what I have seen, just today, this behaviour management system works wonderfully! I will definitely be putting this site in my pile of options for when I am a professionally approved teacher.

The Lollipop Test

Creepy! That was all I could think of throughout the Lollipop Test; even hours after.

Initially, I was just going to visit a youtube video to give me an idea of what would happen but I thought, why not just jump in. I was not prepared for what was about to happen! This video definitely had a great impact on me, to the point I’m considering deleting my facebook profile even though I do not use it often (other than for private messages which apparently aren’t even safe!). I think if I had watched the youtube video first, I would not have completed the activity myself which would not have had as big of impact on me.

I don’t want to give too much away, as I strongly recommend if you use Facebook and post personal things on there you should definitely try this out! Visit this blog to see another peers views on the test and the importance of some people, if not everyone, completing the test. The thought that someone could do this has always crossed my mind. However, actually seeing someone that appears to be creepy and set on ‘finding’ you, hit home!

The never ending workload of University

It was like deja vu two weeks ago when I submitted my second ICT assignment. My feelings started off happy and joyful however, in no time at all turned to tiredness, annoyance and doubt. ‘Out of the frying pan, into the fire’ as some would say. As much as I enjoy my studies sometimes I wish I could stop doing my workload without any repercussions.

I am now venturing onto my third ICT assignment while trying to organise, in my mind, everything I have learnt this semester. The variety of ICT’s that are available, the range of ways to implement ICT’s and the general knowledge needed when using ICT’s  are astounding! I am only hoping that I can organise my thoughts and diminish this feeling of being overwhelmed before the due date of assignment three; even better prior to my professional experience. Provided I can remember the many tools learnt within ‘ICT and Pedagogy’ and the expansive information on ICT’s that have been provided to me, I believe I can complete the requirements of my professional experience and assignment three without a worry.

A few amazing sites and ICT’s I have come across so far include:

  • Catch of the Day – Daily deals on a variety of things – Discussed in one of Mrs. Brown’s blog posts
  • Scootle – Educative website that provides digital technologies that aid in teaching the Australian Curriculum
  • Class Dojo – Behaviour management/ recorder for teachers; and
  • Teacher Kit – App for organising and managing students and classes – Discussed here by Melissa Sherman

Considerations for lesson planning

A few weeks ago I was asked, ‘what do you know about lesson planning?’ Immediately I had a mind full of thoughts and considerations in regards to my knowledge on lesson planning. There is so much to consider before and during planning and especially, prior to implementing any planned teaching (even before implementing any spontaneous teaching). While making my list of planning knowledge, I honestly felt like it could be endless! I have provided a list below, of some of the thoughts and considerations in regards to lesson planning. Please note, this is not a complete list and I believe, as long as I’m studying education and teaching, I will be adding to the list.

What do I know about lesson planning and what do I think about when planning?

  • What do I want the students to learn?
  • How will I get them to show their learning?
  • What types of experiences can be provided for students to ensure optimal learning of the chosen outcomes?
  • What resources are available?
  • What time allowance should be given to complete tasks?
  • Is there anything that may impact on the time allowance? ie. sports carnival
  • What are the student needs, wants, likes and dislikes?
  • What does the students’ prior knowledge consist of?
  • How will I find out their prior knowledge?
  • What are the curriculum and school requirements in regards to the topic?
  • What are alternatives to the approach?
  • What do other sources provide in terms of variations and ideas on the topic?
  • What worked? What didn’t? Why?
  • How can I alter this for next time?
  • Was I confident and up-to-date with knowledge on the topic?
  • What are possible strategies to use?
  • What are the learning styles of the children?
  • Are there any alternatives to implementing the lesson?

And the list goes on..

Connect.ed

I have recently partaken in an online professional development course called Connect.ed. It has been stressed to me, as a pre-service student, the importance of being cyber smart and having the ability to utilise the cyber world and teach students to utilise the cyber world effectively, appropriately and safely. To my surprise, having never heard of this course, it is an Australian Government supported website. This struck me as bizarre; if being cyber smart is imperative to teaching and children’s learning why is this not a widely advertised website?

This course provided me with more of a refresher as I have grown up participating in the cyber world however, it did provide me with additional information I had never really considered. As discussed on Audrey’s blog post relating to this course, “this program covered topics including:

➔ schools, the internet and the law

➔ school policies and cybersafety

➔ students as digital citizens

➔ digital literacy

➔ positive online behaviour

➔ personal and peer safety

➔ e-security

➔ online gaming, social networking, cyberbullying

➔ the ACMA’s cybersafety resources

➔ case studies in online safety”

This course would be beneficial for anyone intending to participate or already participating in the cyber world.

Almost there..

I am almost finished Assignment 2, I think..

I can never really be sure if I am finished with an assignment as I am forever doubting myself. With the help of a one week extension for all students on Assignment 2, my stress has lightened itself a little. Although, I am still aiming to have the assignment completed and handed in tomorrow (the original due date). Believe it or not, even though I am studying to be a teacher, I struggle with writing plans. I can have it all worked out in my head, but it seems when the idea is put to paper, it does not always make sense. With all the different ways to present a plan, my confusion can be excelled. After weeks of working on my Year 1 English unit plan, based on communication systems, I think I am almost ready to say it is complete.

I do believe, that I have done this plan relatively well, although the results will prove this one way or another. Am I happy with what I have so far, yes; hopefully the markers are happy with it too. I have used as many resources as I can to aid in presenting a well thought out, structured and sensible unit plan and if I had unlimited time, I would access even more sources. While writing my justification for this plan, I have become more confident that I have a reasonably good unit plan to present to the course markers and educators.

I hope all my peers present unit plans that they are happy with and if anything, have learnt as much about planning and the use of information and communication technologies to enhance children’s learning and development as I have.

One of my favourite friends!

Pinterest, one of my favourite friends!

Anyone who is signed up to Pinterst is able to upload and share pictures and links to unlimited topics. I have never not found something along the lines of what I’m looking for. The classroom, planning and activity ideas provided by parents, carers, friends and teachers around the world are invaluable for aiding in my own design of classroom layouts and pedagogy.

I would highly recommend looking at this site at least once; for anything. It is available through downloading the app or logging on using a web browser. I love this site so much I have it on my iPad, mobile and computer. Never a day goes by that I cannot access it, if I need it.

If you haven’t checked it out, you should! It is an amazing addition to my learning network and is always adding to my kit of knowledge on a wide variety of topics. It has helped me with ideas for so much including home decor, gardens, clothing options and best of all teaching ideas!

Internet; Friend or Foe

I have had a few days without accessing the internet and it has been great! Having no internet access allowed me to go outside, enjoy activities I don’t usually have time for and just, live a little. The best part about the last few days was that I couldn’t help but have no internet access so there was no thoughts crossing my mind such as, ‘I should be doing uni’, ‘I should go turn the computer on’ or ‘I really need to be researching for my assignments’. Guilt factor for not studying = none; I had no control over the internet situation.

Once I could access the internet, everything went back to normal. First stop, wordpress to catch up on my blogs. After browsing some of the posts my peers have made I came across Audrey’s blog post. Audrey wrote about living without the internet. The first thing that caught my attention was her comment within the post; ‘My instant thought was of course I can ‘live’ without it, but I certainly wouldn’t be able to do all the things that I ‘want’ or ‘need’ to do’. I could not agree more, however, I am not as confident as Audrey that I could in fact, live without the internet long term. I am only 20 after all! Considering I have grown up with the internet, that is a lot of years without the internet! I often think about how I would complete my degree without google, and truthfully, that thought scares me. Having to go to the library and physically search through books and articles to find one sentence I could use in my assignment and then repeat the process; no thank you!

When the internet connection goes down at work, I like the change, however could not handle it being a permanency. Perhaps I am lazy or perhaps I know no different. It is good to know though, that I am not the only one that would struggle to live without internet now that I have become accustomed to using it and having it on hand almost 24/7.

Holidays, Here I come! Not..

As the holidays approach I would usually be working extra hard to have everything completed before the break. This week, I have been sick with a virus therefore, holidays are a no go. Between the catch up work for my three subjects and the assignments I need to start, if not complete, I will be using my holidays as catch up. It is amazing how uni work piles up slowly, yet at the same time, super quick. How naïve of me to think I’d actually get a break from uni!

On a positive note, ensuring I have completed my blog posts will not be a pressure over the holidays. Yay, one less thing to worry about! Hope everyone finds time to have a well-deserved break at some point in the next two weeks.

Stay safe and rejuvenate!
